Designing for Everyone: Where We’ve Been and Where We’re Going in Accessible Design

At Michael Graves Design, accessibility isn’t an afterthought—it’s a foundation. For decades, our design philosophy has centered around creating beautiful, functional products that improve everyday life for everyone. As we reflect on where we’ve been and look ahead, one truth remains: design can—and should—remove barriers.
A Legacy of Accessible Design
Our journey began with a bold idea: design should serve all people, not just the few. Our groundbreaking collection with Target in the early 2000s made high design financially accessible for millions of households. Simple objects like timers, kettles, and garden tools were elevated through color, form, and usability—all while remaining affordable. It was a turning point not only for our studio, but for retail design at large.
Today, we continue to push the boundaries of accessibility in three key areas: cognitive, financial, and physical.
Cognitive Accessibility
Good design reduces friction, especially for those navigating cognitive challenges like memory loss, sensory sensitivities, or ADHD. We prioritize intuitive forms, tactile materials, and visual cues. Whether it’s the cognitive colors of our Whistling Bird Teakettle (blue for handle (cool), red for whistle (hot)) or the simplified grip design of our Quick Fold Cane, each product is thoughtfully engineered to reduce confusion and support independence.
Financial Accessibility
Design equity means affordability without compromise. Our early partnership with Target set the tone for making well-designed products financially accessible. Today, our ongoing collaboration with CVS Health by Michael Graves Design brings thoughtfully designed health products—like the 3-in-1 commode and shower stool—to people across the country at everyday prices. These items meet real needs while honoring the dignity of the user.
Physical Accessibility
Physical support and comfort remain core to our mission. Products like our Bradford Chair from the Pottery Barn collaboration offer accessible features like wheelchair clearance and ADA-compliant hardware, beautifully integrated into timeless home décor. Our C-Grip and Quick Fold Canes, both award-winning, are designed with ergonomic excellence, intuitive folding mechanisms, and style that reflects confidence—not compromise.
Looking Ahead
Where we’re going is grounded in where we’ve been: designing with empathy, innovation, and inclusion. As we explore new product categories and partnerships, our commitment stays the same—delight for all through iconic, accessible design.
