September is National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, a time to recognize the challenges faced by those living with spinal cord injuries and to celebrate their resilience.

Michael Graves, the iconic architect and designer, was a powerful example of such resilience. In 2003, Michael Graves’ life took an unexpected turn when a spinal cord infection, later diagnosed as a rare condition called osteomyelitis, left him paralyzed from the waist down. This life-altering event could have ended his career, but instead, it became a new chapter in his design legacy.

Graves, renowned for his contributions to postmodern architecture and for designing iconic everyday products, used his personal experience with disability to redefine his approach to design. His paralysis led him to recognize the critical need for accessible design—design that is not only functional and beautiful but also inclusive and empathetic to the needs of all users.

In the years following his injury, Michael Graves became a passionate advocate for accessible design. He worked tirelessly to ensure that his products and spaces would provide dignity, independence, and delight to everyone, regardless of their physical abilities. This commitment was evident in his collaborations with companies like Target, where he introduced products that combined elegant design with thoughtful accessibility.

Today, Michael Graves Design continues to honor his legacy by prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity in every project. As we observe Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, we remember Michael Graves not just as a brilliant designer, but as a beacon of hope and a champion for accessible design that makes life better for everyone.
