Michael Graves Design Monthly Delight Feature: Meet Ashton Applewhite

This month we’re delighted to spotlight writer and public speaker Ashton Applewhite. The author of This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism, Ashton is a global leader of the emerging movement for age equity. In her latest newsletter, “I’ve started using a cane,” Ashton describes what took her so long and why she’s so glad she did. What surprised her most was how the cane helped her reclaim confidence, walk taller, and feel liberated. Her story is a compelling account of the value of confronting our internalized ageism and ableism. It’s also a powerful reminder that mobility aids can support independence and dignity on one’s own terms.

I figured using a cane would make me more cautious. It was the opposite.”

A note we loved:

When Ashton began using a cane, she chose the Michael Graves Design Streamline Cane. Seeing thoughtful, well-designed mobility aids show up in honest, lived stories like hers reinforces the importance of design that meets people where they are, without stigma or spectacle.

We highly recommend reading the full article, as well as signing up for Ashton’s newsletter. (She doesn’t write often, she won’t give your email away, and it’s easy to unsubscribe.) We also suggest you pick up her book, This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism. It’s a great read, and guaranteed to make you feel better about the years ahead.
